Oder einfach auch “Hammer” war das gestrige Konzert von Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen im A-Trane, Berlin. Es war sehr voll und echt eng, doch das Publikum nahm das alles mit Humor und Freudlichkeit, auch wenn nicht mal ein Abstellplatz für sein Getränk zu finden war. Zusosagen, es war proppenvoll. Die fröhlichen Gesichter und die gemeinsame Freude an der Vorstellung der Funky Soul Kitchen mit Mike Russell als Sänger und Entertainer, gleichwohl Bandleader und Gitarrist. Rudy Redl am piano und keys fokussiert auf den treibenden Bass von Sir Charles Williamson schlug virtuos und funky zu, während der Bassist seinem Instrument die ungewöhnlichsten Töne zu entlocken verstand, sei es das Singal eines Zuges oder die Geschosse und Bomebeinschläge im Antikriegssong The Fall. Während Drummer DiCarlo mal sanft und mal heftig den Takt angab. Das Drummer Bass Duo hat es drauf.
Und natürlich alle Musiker spielten mit absoluter Begeisterung und vollkommener Hingabe bisweilen über die körperlichen Kräfte hinaus. Genauso sind sie und geben immer alles für ihr Publikum, das die Band ohne Zugabe auch nicht entlassen wollte.
In der Pause wurde ich zunächst von Sabine aus Schwerin gefragt: Woher kommt die Band? und war sehr überrascht, dass alle Musiker in Berlin wohnen. Sie schwärmte überglücklich von der Hammer Band, die sie an die90er Jahre erinnerte. Als die Mauer fiel und sie als Ostberlinerin endlich die musikalische Wucht (des Westens) kennenlernen durfte. Funky Soul Kitchen hat sie richtig glücklich gemacht! Das ist ein Statement, das den Musikern sicher gefällt.
Aber auch sonst hörte man in der Pause und nach dem Konzert nur Lob und Begeisterung für die Band. Eine Gruppe junger Menschen unterhielt sich sehr angeregt und anschließend fielen sie sich in die Arme. “Na hat’s euch gefallen?” Großartig lachten sie, sehr großartig.

The concert by Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen at the A-Trane in Berlin last night was simply amazing. It was very crowded and really tight, but the audience took it all with humor and friendliness, even if there was no room to put your drink down. It was packed, so to speak. The happy faces and the shared joy in the performance of the Funky Soul Kitchen with Mike Russell as singer and entertainer, as well as bandleader and guitarist. Rudy Redl on piano and keys, focused on the driving bass of Sir Charles Williamson, played virtuously and funky, while the bassist knew how to coax the most unusual sounds out of his instrument, be it the sound of a train or the shells and bomb impacts in the anti-war song The Fall. While drummer DiCarlo sometimes gently and sometimes fiercely set the beat. The drummer bass duo has it all.
And of course, all the musicians played with absolute enthusiasm and complete dedication, sometimes beyond their physical strength. That’s exactly how they are and always give their all for their audience, who didn’t want to let the band go without an encore either.
During the break, I was first asked by Sabine from Schwerin: Where does the band come from? and was very surprised that all the musicians live in Berlin. She was over the moon and raved about the awesome band, which reminded her of the 90s. When the wall came down and she, as an East Berliner, was finally able to experience the musical power (of the West). Funky Soul Kitchen made her really happy! That’s a statement the musicians are sure to like.
But even otherwise, during the break and after the concert, there was only praise and enthusiasm for the band. A group of young people talked very animatedly and then they fell into each other’s arms. “Well, did you like it?” They laughed, very much.
